We provide tailored support according to the field and specific needs.
We focus on providing hands-on support for startups in deep tech, particularly in life sciences and environmental energy sectors, as well as for Japanese companies aiming for global expansion and international companies looking to enter the Japanese market. We are also committed to building a community where members support each other.
Currently, in Japan, the CIC Institute and Japan Desk operates as a specialized team dedicated to supporting startup growth and building ecosystems.
CIC Institute
The CIC Institute is a team that works with the Japanese government, local governments, universities, and other organizations to support the growth of startups that can achieve global success by leveraging our expertise in building innovation ecosystems and supporting startups, especially those related to deep tech.
The Industry-specific communities that aims for collaboration that leads to practical application through events, seminars, and business support programs.
One of the largest communities in the energy and environment fields in Japan, with more than 560 startups, large companies, research institutions, and local governments participating. It aims to create innovations through events in related fields and hands-on innovation programs in which startups and large companies collaborate.
A community of alumni, mentors, and others involved in the life science startup support program implemented by CIC. Regular information exchange and networking opportunityare conducted.

This program is designed to support the growth and overseas expansion of startups, mainly in the energy/environment, and life science fields.

TIB CATAPULT – Global Cluster Creation Project-
A cluster for innovation creation, called the “Global City-tech Bridge,” is being operated by domestic companies and universities involved in urban-related technologies, in collaboration with Connected Places Catapult, one of the UK’s innovation hubs. This cluster aims to implement startup products that solve issues faced by large cities into society.

Aichi GX Acceleration ProgramDiscover
This program encourages collaboration between corporates in Aichi Prefecture and startups in the GX area (especially in the circular economy area). CIC will provide selected startups tailor-made support, including business growth support, matching with business companies in Aichi Prefecture, and support for POC.

Kering Generation AwardDiscover
In collaboration with Kering, the global luxury group, we are organizing an awards program with a 10 million yen prize for the 1st place. Under the main theme of “Sustainable Fashion & Beauty,” we are looking for startups who has technologies related to the four sub-themes.

Science2Startup JapanDiscover
In this program, top Japanese researchers in the life science field refine their plans for applying their technological seeds to the development of pharmaceuticals and other products together with top global investors, and present their plans to investors, pharmaceutical companies, entrepreneurs, researchers, university officials, and others at an invitation-only symposium.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government “Be Smart TOKYO (Smart Service Implementation Promotion Project)Discover
This program aims to discover startup with cutting-edge technologies and services, then implement them to Tokyo. We connect the selected startups to assets owners and provides growth support including cost for initial POCs, mentoring, and promotion.

Pitch training and pitch practice opportunities in English for startups interested in overseas markets, as well as opportunities to connect with overseas investors will be provided thourough an agreement with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government “Blockbuster TOKYO (Drug Discovery and Medical Startup Development Support Project)Discover
To promote the formation of an ecosystem for the development of drug discovery and medical startups in Tokyo, LINK-J, CIC Institute, and Mitsubishi Research Institute are jointly participating as promoters. The program promotes the creation of an ecosystem that leverages the strengths of Tokyo’s concentration of pharmaceutical companies, support organizations, investors, and other entities.

Holding a PhD in Energy and Materials, Masaru has a rich background in policymaking related to deep tech startups, having worked at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). He later pursued research on startup ecosystems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and gained valuable experience in management consulting and venture capital. Oversaw the launch of CIC Tokyo, providing comprehensive support to startups.
With a Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Ayano has significant experience in research and development policy on life science and medical areas, having worked at MEXT. Ayano’s international experience includes studying at MIT, where she contributed to research on life sciences ecosystems and the global expansion of shared wet labs for startups. Joining CIC in July 2021, she is now responsible for startup support programs, overseas expansion initiatives, and the development of life sciences-related business ventures.
A graduate of a U.S. state university, Midori started her career at Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting, where she worked on strategic initiatives in the AI and robotics industries. Midori later took on a leadership role in launching services in the U.S. for a robotics company, followed by spearheading the establishment and growth of a U.S.-based startup’s Japanese branch as a business development lead. Currently, Midori specializes in supporting startups in the environmental sector and manage open innovation programs.
Having held key roles at Google Japan and WeWork Japan in new business development and startup support programs, Yusuke assumed his current position in April 2024. Additionally, Yusuke has been a driving force behind TEDxTokyo since 2010 and were selected as one of 25 TEDx Ambassadors globally in 2019, supporting over 2,000 community ecosystems. A graduate of Sophia University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering (Mathematics), he now focus on assisting startups in implementing innovative solutions in society.
After graduating from Akita University, Ikuko embarked on a career in public administration with the Akita Prefectural Government. Her experience spans industrial promotion, corporate attraction, support for the manufacturing sector, addressing demographic challenges, and human resource development. Ikuko also completed a course at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ Local Autonomy College. Since joining CIC in October 2022, Ikuko has led startup support projects in collaboration with government and academic institutions, while also coordinating and MC-ing events.
A graduate of Osaka University, Risa has a background in public service with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, focusing on startup support, entrepreneur development, and sectors such as healthcare and education. In 2023, Risa was seconded to Plug and Play Japan, where she managed pitch events and DemoDays, as well as the Food & Beverage accelerator program. Since June 2024, she has been supporting the growth of environmental and energy-related startups in their current role.
Arriving in Japan in 2018, Ushani has played a key role in the implementation of network infrastructure and operational transitions for large-scale clients in the tech industry. She later contributed to the establishment of a talent development platform, fostering collaboration between teams with diverse functions. In May 2024, Ushani assumed her current position, continuing to focus on promoting cross-functional growth and development.
After graduating from university, Makiko began her career as a cabin crew member for a state-owned airline in the Middle East. Upon returning to Japan, she transitioned into academia as a university administrator. Makiko served as a core member in the establishment and operation of a newly founded medical school, handling a broad range of administrative responsibilities including academic affairs, international student support, and clinical education at both the university and its affiliated hospital. In June 2024, Makiko assumed her current role, overseeing all administrative operations at CIC Institute.
Japan Desk strives to connect Japanese innovators, founders, and organizations to the U.S. market, ensuring a richer, quicker, and smoother expansion experience. In partnership with Japanese government agencies and associations, we connect businesses across the innovation ecosystems of Japan and Boston. Our services include developing customized, hands-on programming, making strategic stakeholder introductions, and expanding professional networks.
